Complete qualifications while at school

Top
If you are in a Queensland secondary school, and in Year 10, 11 or 12, the VET in Schools (VETiS) program supports you to undertake vocational education (VET) qualifications while you are still at school.

This training:
  • is free to you; you do not have to pay any co-contribution fees
  • can be undertaken as part of your school studies
  • allows you to gain a Certificate I or Certificate II qualification through a General Training Pathway
  • allows you to gain a Certificate II or Certificate III qualification through a School-based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SAT).
  • helps put you on a path to employment and further VET opportunities, making it easier to move from school to work or further training
  • is undertaken through a General Training Pathway, or in a workplace as a school-based apprentice or trainee.
  • is funded by Department of Trade, Employment and Training (DTET).
CTA Training Specialists is a Skills Assure Supplier (SAS) approved to deliver the:
  • Certificate II in Cookery SIT20421
  • Certificate III in Commercial Cookery SIT30821
  • Certificate II in Hospitality SIT20322
  • Certificate III in Hospitality SIT30622
  • Certificate III in Business BSB30120.

VET in Schools (VETiS) provides subsidised training through either a General Training Pathway or a school-based Apprenticeship or Traineeship Pathway.

CTA Training Specialists offers the following qualifications under the two training pathways.

General Training Pathway
  • Certificate II in Cookery SIT20421
  • Certificate II in Hospitality SIT20322
  • Certificate III in Hospitality SIT30622
  • Certificate III in Business BSB30120
Apprenticeship or Traineeship Pathway
  • Certificate II in Cookery SIT20421
  • Certificate III in Commercial Cookery SIT30821
  • Certificate II in Hospitality SIT20322
  • Certificate III in Hospitality SIT30622
  • Certificate III in Business BSB30120

Through the General Training Pathway (Certificate I or II qualifications), students can complete a nationally recognised qualification and develop practical, job-ready skills to leave school feeling prepared and confident about their future. This pathway focuses on career paths linked to priority industries and sectors and helps make moving from school to work or further training much easier.
General Training Pathway
  • Certificate II in Cookery SIT20421
  • Certificate II in Hospitality SIT20322
  • Certificate III in Hospitality SIT30622
  • Certificate III in Business BSB30120
Eligibility for General Training Pathway To access a subsidised General Training Pathway training place, you must:
  • be a student enrolled in Years 10, 11 or 12 in a Queensland secondary school;
  • not be an international secondary school exchange student;
  • not have already completed a Certificate I or II VETiS qualification funded by DTET;
  • have a genuine interest in pursuing a post school vocational occupation;
  • be first enrolled in a General Training Pathway qualification on or after 1 January 2026 and have commenced training no later than 17 September 2027;
  • not enrol and commence training if training and assessment cannot be completed by 30 June 2028.

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATs) allow high school students (usually in Years 10, 11 or 12) to earn a wage and train towards a nationally recognised qualification while still at school.

Some of the training and/or work must take place during school hours and will impact on the SAT’s school timetable.

School students:
  • can only undertake apprenticeships and traineeships through a registered School-Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship Pathway (SAT).
  • cannot undertake a part-time apprenticeship or traineeship funded through Career Start.
This is to ensure a school student does not use their entire apprenticeship or traineeship entitlement while at school.

To be eligible to receive government subsidised training, the school-based apprentice or trainee must:
  • have entered into a Training Contract for a qualification funded by Department of Trade, Employment and Training (DTET)
  • not have already completed or be enrolled in a SAT.
Your employer will provide or arrange appropriate facilities, a suitable range of work, supervision and the on-the-job training required by the Act and your training plan.

CTA Training Specialists, as the Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO), will review the employment arrangements, complete an Employer Resource Assessment and develop the training plan in consultation with you and your employer.

A SAT pathway is part of the Australian Apprenticeships system. All parties; you, your employer, CTA Training Specialists and your school, must sign an Apprenticeship and Traineeship Training Contract as required under the Further Education and Training Act 2014.

Within a 10-year period you can only undertake two funded apprenticeship or traineeship qualifications across VET in Schools (VETiS), Career Start and Career Boost. A School-Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship Pathway (SAT) uses one of these entitlements.
Apprenticeship or Traineeship Pathway
  • Certificate II in Cookery SIT20421
  • Certificate III in Commercial Cookery SIT30821
  • Certificate II in Hospitality SIT20322
  • Certificate III in Hospitality SIT30622
  • Certificate III in Business BSB30120

By participating in VET in Schools (VETiS), you can expect to
  • build job-ready skills
  • gain the confidence needed to pursue their career goals
  • earn a nationally recognised vocational qualification
  • access further training or employment opportunities after graduation.
After completing a qualification through the general training pathway, CTA Training Specialists may support your transition into:
  • the workforce
  • further education or training beyond school.
This support may include career advice and facilitating connections with potential employers.

DTET surveys

As part of receiving a subsidised training place, you may be asked to complete a DTET survey. Your feedback helps ensure students have an effective and supportive training experience and will also improve outcomes for other Queensland students.

If you are a Queensland secondary school student in Year 10, 11 or 12 and are interested in undertaking a CTA qualification through VET in Schools (VETiS), start by speaking with your school.

Your next steps:
  • Speak with your school's VET Coordinator or Careers Adviser
  • Tell them which CTA qualification you are interested in
  • Confirm that CTA can deliver the qualification to students at your school
  • Complete the required eligibility and enrolment information
  • Begin your training with CTA.

Our secondary schools play a vital role in supporting students, together with their parents or carers, to make informed decisions about their training and career pathways.

To ensure students get the most out of the VET in Schools program, it is important their participation aligns with both the program’s objectives and each student’s individual career goals.

Schools are encouraged to take a targeted approach, enrolling students in training opportunities with us that supports their intended post-school pathways.

Students need to commence training no later than 17 September 2027 and complete training by no later than 30 June 2028.

VET in Schools (VETiS) can help by providing subsidised training for employees through school-based apprenticeships and traineeships. General training pathways support skills development and prepare school students for the world of work, benefiting both employees and the business.
