Key Learning Outcomes

Key topics covered in this module include:

This section emphasises that compliance is the personal responsibility of every board member and cannot be delegated solely to a club manager. You will explore the specific risks of non-compliance such as individual fines, potential jail terms, and the permanent removal of your club’s liquor and gaming licences.

Modern governance now requires a "positive duty" to prevent incidents like bullying, sexual harassment, and discrimination before they occur within the club. You will learn to implement proactive controls to protect staff and members, ensuring the board meets its legal obligation to stop harm rather than simply reacting to it.

This area covers the critical necessity of protecting staff and member records against breaches of Commonwealth and State privacy legislation. Directors will examine the strength of their club’s cyber security controls to prevent hacking and evaluate whether existing insurance is sufficient to manage the risks of financial data theft.

You will learn to navigate a "minefield" of laws including the Registered Clubs Act, AML/CTF 2006, and ASIC insolvency regulations. This section provides a framework for creating board-level checklists to track critical due dates for financial returns, insurance renewals, and statutory reporting across all levels of government.
To extend your learning, each module includes a curated, downloadable resource sheet featuring essential links and tools—we’ve done the heavy lifting, so you have the industry’s best guidance right at your fingertips!
