SIT50422 Diploma of Hospitality Management

This qualification reflects the role of highly skilled senior operators who use a broad range of hospitality skills combined with managerial skills and sound knowledge of industry to coordinate hospitality operations. They operate independently, have responsibility for others and make a range of operational business decisions.

The unit of competency, SITHIND008 Work effectively in hospitality service requires the student to complete 36 complete service periods. The duration of each service period will be up to four (4) hours and is required to cover breakfast, lunch and dinner. If unemployed, it is the student’s responsibility to source an appropriate location/venue for this mandatory work placement.

The unit of competency, SITHCCC043 Work effectively as a cook requires the student to complete 48 complete food service periods. The duration of each service period will be up to four (4) hours and is required to cover breakfast, lunch and dinner. If unemployed, it is the student’s responsibility to source an appropriate location/venue for this mandatory work placement. If you are a school based trainee, restrictions on units able to be completed will apply.

Training and assessment is delivered face to face for each student in their local area in clustered training sessions. Students must be able to attend these training sessions to complete all units of competency. Students may complete their practical training components in a simulated environment and will be provided all equipment and facilities required to complete the units of competency in this qualification. Students will be completing the theory component of this qualification in a classroom environment forming the remaining part of the training schedule.

The qualification is not suitable for an Australian apprenticeship pathway.

This qualification is delivered:

• Full-time over 36 months or
• Part-time over 72 months

SIT50422 Diploma of Hospitality Management provides the practical and theoretical skills needed to work effectively in a departmental or small business manager role. Participants will be required for training one (1) day per month and either be employed full time (40 hours) a week or part time (20) hours a week to gain the required workplace skills and knowledge. As part of the Training and Assessment process, students will be required to undertake practical assessment within their workplace or a suitable designated workplace.  You do not need to be employed to undertake this course.

Funding by the Queensland Department of Employment, Small Business and Training is available through the VET investment budget (Higher Level Skills).

What is “Higher Level Skills”?

The Higher Level Skills program provides a government subsidy to support eligible individuals to access subsidised training in selected certificate IV and above qualifications, or priority skill sets.

The aim is to assist individuals to gain the Higher Level Skills required to secure employment or career advancement in priority industries or to transition to university. Employers may also be able to access training to address workforce development needs.

What Training is Available?

Subsidies are provided for a select number of Certificate IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma qualifications, and priority skill sets critical to productivity within the workplace.

How does the program work?

The list of registered training organisations (RTOs) approved to deliver each subsidised qualification or skill set is published on the Queensland Skills Gateway.

Individuals and employers are free to choose their preferred RTO from this list. The subsidy is paid directly to the RTO as training is delivered and reported to the department.

What level of subsidy is available?

Training in vocational areas that align with critical industry skilling needs and government priorities will receive a higher government subsidy.

A higher subsidy will also be paid to support participation by concessional students, such as disadvantaged learners, and those undertaking training in remote locations.

Does the individual need to contribute to the cost of training?

Individuals undertaking training must contribute to their training costs through a ‘co-contribution fee’. While the amount of the fee is determined by the Skills Assured Suppliers (SAS), it is expected the co-contribution fee will be greater for higher level training given the increased benefits that accrue to individuals and industry.

The fee may be paid on behalf of the individual by an employer or another third party, but cannot be paid or waived by the SAS, unless approved by the department.

What outcomes are expected?

SAS will be measured on successful training completions and whether the training resulted in an employment benefit such as securing a job or career advancement, or transition to university for further education.
