Course Overview
Developed in partnership with Club Governance, this module examines the board’s fundamental responsibility to oversee the long-term viability and growth of their organisation. You will explore the planning hierarchy, moving from 10-year strategic visions to 12-month operational budgets and specific project plans. This unit equips directors with the tools to "right-mind" the board through position papers and SWOT analyses, ensuring every director is aligned toward a collective future rather than pulling the club in conflicting directions.

Key Learning Outcomes
Key topics covered in this module include:
This section defines the distinct levels of organisational planning, ranging from long-term strategic visions led by the board to short-term operational plans managed by the CEO. You will learn that while a strategic plan is not a strict legal requirement, maintaining a current and relevant plan is a core standard of professional due care and diligence for every director.
Directors explore the importance of moving from individual perspectives to a unified "collective vision" to prevent the club from stagnating or being dominated by a single voice. This area focuses on the board’s role in agreeing upon and documenting a clear vision for the next 10 to 20 years, ensuring the organisation has a definitive destination to aim toward.
This section introduces the practical steps for effective planning, starting with a position paper to summarise past financial performance, regulatory trends, and member needs. You will learn how to facilitate a "SWOT" session to identify internal strengths and weaknesses alongside external opportunities and threats, providing a factual foundation for future strategy.
The final focus area teaches you how to synthesise dozens of complex issues into four to six manageable "pillars," such as governance, people and culture, or financial health. You will develop the ability to create simple mission and vision statements that guide daily operations and long-term initiatives, ensuring the board leaves a lasting legacy for future generations of members.
