Many people treat RMLV (Responsible Management of a Licensed Venue) as nothing more than a mere regulatory requirement for people to manage licensed venues in Queensland.
But it’s so much more.
It’s an excellent opportunity to learn new skills that can be easily transferred into other careers in the hospitality industry and beyond.
Don’t believe us? In this article we’ll cover what transferable skills you learn in RMLV and how these can apply to other career paths that you may consider.
What do you learn in RMLV?
We’re not going to cover everything you learn in an RMLV as some of those are very specific to the management of a Licensed Venue.
Some of the skills you will learn are:
-
Conflict resolution and deescalation: managing intoxicated or aggressive patrons can translate into dealing with difficult workplaces, tense workplace situations and any other high-pressure conflicts in people-facing roles.
-
Risk management: identifying hazards, assessing threats to safety and preemptively acting is an excellent skill to have. It can apply to many roles but especially roles with any sort of duty-of-care obligations.
-
Regulatory compliance: in RMLV, you will learn about liquor law and how to keep your venue compliant with the laws. This is an excellent skill to have, there are many careers that require a compliance mindset and knowledge of regulations and how to start compliant within those regulations.
-
Incident management: Incident management is about responding to and recording incidents properly. This can help in many roles, not the least healthcare, HR and management roles.
-
Responsible service and harm minimisation: Outside of a hospitality career, harm minimisation can transfer over to roles where you are safeguarding vulnerable people. This skill can help with ethical decision making.
-
Leadership and staff supervision: This is an easy one. Managing and supervising a team is a skill that is transferable to any form of management role.
As you can see there are many skills you will gain from RMLV training. Let’s have a look at the sort of careers that may benefit from these transferable skills.
Careers that benefit from RMLV Transferable Skills
Some of the careers that will benefit are:
Event Manager
Running an event and running a venue aren't too much different. You're managing crowds, coordinating staff, keeping people safe and making sure everything stays within the rules. Risk management and incident handling are key for event work. Plus if the event is licensed, well you’ve got an RMLV.
Security and Crowd Control
Conflict resolution and de-escalation are important for this sort of role. Knowing how to read a situation before it escalates into a fight or worse, and also knowing how to properly record these incidents is super important for security work.
Hotel and Accommodation Management
Hotels combine everything: staff supervision, duty of care to guests, compliance obligations and the occasional difficult customer at 2am. The leadership and risk management skills from RMLV carry over almost entirely.
Retail Management
Especially in licensed retail like bottle shops, but the crossover goes further. Supervising staff, handling difficult customers and maintaining compliance with regulations are daily tasks in retail management.
Compliance or WHS Officer
If you enjoyed the regulatory side of RMLV, this is the natural place for your knowledge to take you. Understanding legislation, applying it to real situations, identifying hazards and documenting incidents are the core of any compliance or workplace health and safety role.
Community and Social Services
Harm minimisation and safeguarding vulnerable people is really important when doing support work, youth work and community services.
Finally, even if you aren’t a manager of the licensed venue doing RMLV can help you in your hospitality career. We’ve spent along time talking about how it’ll help in different careers and it’s also massively helpful for hospitality careers. Not only do you learn skills that you can apply right away but, if you’re not a manager of a licensed venue already, it can be a great addition to a CV if you are looking to take that next step.
