RSA Requirements in South Australia

Top

In South Australia, all staff serving, selling, or supplying alcohol must have a valid RSA. All crowd control employees within licensed venues must also have a valid RSA.

If employed in either position without an RSA, you have three months from employment to complete the course and provide your employer with the statement of attainment (certificate).

Specific venues and licence types do not require staff to hold valid RSA. The following are some of those exemptions:

  • Venues with a liquor production and sales licence but not one that allows them to sell, supply or consume liquor on the premises.
  • Venues that have a packaged liquor sales licence and only sell liquor through direct sales transactions
  • Venues that have an interstate direct sales licence
  • Venues that sell or supply liquor to a resident for consumption on a licensed premises

The exemptions are to be used as a guide only. To ensure you are exempt from requiring a valid RSA review South Australia’s General Code of Practice Guidelines in relation to the Liquor Licensing Act of 1997

Upon completing the course, you will be issued an official Statement of Attainment, your RSA certificate.

Your RSA Statement of Attainment (Certificate) does not expire in South Australia. There is no need to retake the course.

South Australia accepts all other RSA certificates as long as they are from:

  • An RTO that is approved to provide the course.
  • Is for the nationally recognised unit of competency SITHFAB021 Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol or a preceding unit.
  • It is still valid. An expired NSW, VIC or ACT RSA will not be valid in SA.

You must ensure that you undertake the RSA course through a training organisation commission certified by the South Australia commissioner.
CTA Training Specialists is an approved training provider.

A complete list of approved RTOs can be found on the South Australia Consumer and Business Services website.

Minors can not serve, supply or sell liquor in South Australia.

The following exemptions apply to minors, as stated in South Australia’s General Code of Practice Guidelines regarding the Liquor Licensing Act of 1997.

  • A minor can be employed to sell, serve or supply liquor if they are above the age of 16 and are the child of the licensee or a responsible person for the licensed premises and
