Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) Requirements in ACT

Top

In Canberra & ACT, Food Safety Supervisors play an important role within the hospitality and food industries. They ensure businesses comply with national food regulations to protect public health.

All food businesses in the ACT must appoint at least one Food Safety Supervisor with a valid FSS certificate.

Individuals can become a FSS by completing this course for the nationally recognised training package SITSS00069 Food Safety Supervision Skill Set. The course covers various topics, including identifying and managing food safety hazards, effective food handling techniques, and the legal requirements for food safety in the ACT. Upon completing the course, participants receive a Statement of Attainment, also known as a Food Safety Supervisor certificate. This statement of attainment is valid for 5 years.

The primary responsibilities of a Food Safety Supervisor include developing, implementing, and maintaining food safety procedures and practices within the food business. This includes ensuring that food safety practices are consistently followed by all staff members, conducting regular checks to monitor compliance with food safety regulations, and addressing any food safety issues that arise. Additionally, Food Safety Supervisors are responsible for training and educating staff on food safety procedures to ensure that everyone involved in food preparation and handling adheres to best practices.

Our FSS course is delivered online and can be completed at your own pace over a three-month period (will we need to change this). The course content includes all the learning outcomes from the Level 1 and level 2 food safety courses.

The course includes both online and practical assessments. The online assessments are in the form of quizzes and can be done as many times as required. The practical assessment must be completed with a supervisor. The supervisor must complete and sign your supervisor report.

A supervisor must have 12 months of experience working with food and can be:

  • Someone you work with
  • Someone you have worked with in the last 12 months
  • Someone you volunteered with.

It is important to ensure that the supervisor completing your report observes you doing everything listed on it on three separate occasions.

We understand that it can be hard to find a supervisor if you are new to the industry or country. If this is the case, you can do the following:

  • Ask a friend or family member in the food industry to sign off on your practical assessment. Just ensure they have at least 12 months of experience in the industry.
  • Get a list of local food-based charities from the council. Volunteer there and get one of the regular volunteers to sign off on your practical assessment.

Your Food Safety Supervisor certificate is only valid for 5 years and must be renewed before it expires. You can renew your certificate by completing a refresher or full course.
