About FBPFSY1002

Top

This online training course provides the nationally recognised certificate for FBPFSY1002 Follow work procedures to maintain food safety, which allows you to work in the food processing sector in QLD, NSW, WA, NT, VIC, ACT, and SA.

In NSW this course can not be used to work as a food safety supervisor, as it doesn’t provide a NSW Food Authority Blue & Orange Certificate. Please consult your employer on which competency you are required to undertake to work as a food safety supervisor. This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to maintain food safety (including food allergen management) when carrying out work tasks. Basic food safety practices include personal hygiene and conduct, safe food handling, housekeeping and waste disposal related to work tasks, and responsibilities where work involves routine manual processes and operation of simple automated equipment.

This is an entry level course and applies to individuals who work in a number of job roles throughout food processing industries at various levels including:

  • Baker’s Assistant
  • Bakery Production Assistant
  • Food and Beverage Factory Hand
  • Food and/or Beverage Processing Operator
  • Food and Beverage Packaging Worker
  • Food Processing Sales Assistant
  • Sales Representative – Food and/or Beverage Industry
  • Food Process Worker Assistant

In businesses such as:

  • Food Product Manufacturers
  • Flour Mills
  • Canneries
  • Dried Food PackersBakers
  • Pasta Manufacturers
  • Pickle, Relish, Chutney, and Condiment Producers

This unit supersedes and is equivalent to FBPFSY1001 Follow work procedures to maintain food safety.

Depending on the requirements of your workplace and/or local council, you may wish also to undertake the hospitality food safety supervisor course (SITXFSA005 Use Hygienic Practices for Food Safety & SITXFSA006 Participate in Safe Food Handling Practices) and/or the SIRRFSA001 Handle Food Safely in a Retail Environment.

This course is delivered online and takes 9-10 hours to complete. It doesn’t have to be done in a single setting and can be completed over 3 months.

The course includes both online and practical assessments. The online assessments are quizzes that can be taken as many times as required. The practical assessment must be completed with a supervisor who must complete and sign your supervisor report.

A supervisor must have 12 months of experience working with food and can be:

  • Someone you work with
  • Someone you have worked with in the last 12 months
  • Someone you volunteered with.

It is essential to ensure that the supervisor completing your report observes you doing everything listed on the report on three separate occasions.

We understand that finding a supervisor can be challenging if you are new to the industry or country. If this is the case, you can do the following:

  • Ask a friend or family member in the food industry to sign off on your practical assessment. Just ensure you have at least 12 months of experience in the industry.
  • Get a list of local food-based charities from the council. Volunteer there and get one of the regular volunteers to sign off on your practical assessment.

The FBPFSY1002 statement of attainment does not expire, so you are not required to refresh your training.

However, if you are an appointed food safety supervisor within your business, you may do the course every five years to keep your certificate current.
