Licensee training courses are a requirement for most licensees, approved managers and club secretaries under New South Wales Liquor and Gaming Laws.

The training helps prepare them for the challenges of operating a licensed venue and covers responsibilities when managing and preventing alcohol related harm.

What is an LT Certificate?

In New South Wales (NSW), Australia, a Licensee Training Certificate is a qualification required for individuals who wish to hold a liquor license or manage a licensed premises under the state's liquor laws. The certificate demonstrates that the licensee has completed the necessary training to understand their legal responsibilities and obligations under the NSW liquor laws.

The certificate ensures that licensees are knowledgeable about their legal responsibilities, for example, promoting the responsible service of alcohol, minimising and preventing alcohol-related harm and ensuring compliance with liquor license conditions.

Who needs an LT Certificate?

The licensee training course is a requirement for all licensees, approved managers and club secretaries of venues classified as Tier 1 licenses in New South Wales. This includes the following license types:
  • Club licence
  • Hotels licence
  • General and small bar licence
  • Packaged liquor licence
  • Wholesale licence
  • On-premises licences
If you are applying for a new liquor licence, you must ensure you have completed your RSA and Licensee Trainee (if relevant to your type of liquor licence).

If applying to transfer a liquor licence, you must complete your Licensee training and/or advanced licensee training within 60 days of receiving provisional approval.

If appointing an approved manager or club secretary, that person must complete their Licensee and/or approved licensee training within 60 days of applying with Liquor & Gaming NSW.

Interstate workers looking to become licence holders, approved managers or club secretaries with a valid RSA certificate can skip the RSA bridging course if they complete their Licensee Training.

How do I get a Licensee Training Certificate in Australia?

Getting your licensee training certificate is really simple.

Find an approved training provider on the Liquor & Gaming NSW website that provides LT.

Once you have decided on a training provider (we are an approved training provider for LT), go to their website and book your LT course.

Please note, if you do not have an RSA endorsement on your competency card then you will need to do an RSA course as well.

Once you have booked your LT it’s as simple as attending the course and completing the assessments.

Can I do an LT course Online?

  • a national RSA statement of attainment from South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland, or Tasmania, issued within the last five years.
