Getting your RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) certificate is important if you work in hospitality or in any role involving the service of alcohol.

It helps provide you with the skills and knowledge to work in licensed venues. Throughout the course you will learn to:
  • Understand your obligations under the law
  • Identify customers to whom alcohol service may be refused
  • Responsibly assist customers to drink within appropriate limits
  • Assist alcohol affected customers
Many students get stressed when it comes to the RSA assessment, especially in relation to the video you will need to take to meet the requirements as laid out by the Australian Government.

To help you out, we’ve created this guide to passing your RSA Assessment.

What is the RSA Assessment Process?

The RSA Assessment process is spread across the full course.

At the end of each section there will be a multi-choice knowledge check. You will need to answer all questions correctly before moving on to the next section, however, it’s not as hard as it seems. If you get a question wrong, you can re-take the quiz as many times as you need to get it right. You can also review the course materials during the quiz and when you re-do the quiz you will only need to answer the question or questions you got wrong.

At the end of the course, you will need to complete an online assessment. As with the knowledge checks you will be able to re-take the assessment as many times as needed to complete your RSA.

Afterwards, you will need to film a video which demonstrates your competency to video scenarios. You will need to provide the correct responses when refusing the service of alcohol.

A few quick tips for the videos:
  • Use a smartphone with video capabilities or a webcam.
  • Record at the lowest resolution possible to keep file sizes small.

Tips on Passing the RSA Assessment First Time

To give yourself the best chance of success, here are some tips:

1. Allocate Enough Time

Set aside enough time to go through the course materials and complete the assessments. Rushing through can result in missing details and not learning the material well enough to apply it to your future job.

The point of the RSA course is not to pass the assessment but to help you prepare for real world scenarios.

2. Read Each Question Carefully

Take a moment to read each question carefully. It’s easy to misinterpret a question if you skim over it.

3. Stay Attentive During the Course

Engaging with the course materials is key to retaining information. Take notes, highlight key points, and review examples provided in the videos or case studies.

4. Choose a Quiet Time

Pick a time when you know you’ll be free from distractions. This could be early in the morning, during a quiet evening, or any time you can focus without interruptions. A peaceful environment allows you to concentrate better, reducing the chance of mistakes.

5. Take the Test Promptly

Once you’ve completed the course, take the assessment while the information is still fresh in your mind. The sooner you tackle it, the less likely you are to forget crucial details. If you wait too long, you may need to spend extra time revisiting the materials to refresh your memory.

Finally, don’t worry—if you fail, you can retake the assessment!

As part of the assessment process, you will also need to include two videos of you reacting to common situations. We also have a guide on what needs to be included in your RSA video.

What Happens Now?

If you have passed the assessment and the video assessment then...

Congratulations—you’ve passed! You’ll receive an interim certificate, which you can use to start working immediately. Your official certificate will follow in the mail.

For NSW residents: You’ll need to apply for an RSA competency card using your interim certificate.
