Certificate III in HospitalityTaking customer’s order can at times be difficult and stressful, especially if there is a large amount of people at one table giving their order. There are some simple steps which can assist you and make it less stressful.

Accurate order taking is essential in providing high quality customer service, as providing the customer with the wrong product can be frustrating, not only for the customer but for yourself as well. The way to remember the customer’s order and ensure that you have it right:

  • Repeat the order back to the customer. This ensures that you have got the order correct as the customer has confirmed this.

  • Where possible – record the order, for example: have a note pad and pen so that you can write the order down.

  • If you are in doubt that you have the correct order – reconfirm that it is correct.

Many customers have a set brand of beverage that they prefer, and you should ensure that the correct brand of beverage is provided, therefore, this is where it is essential to write down the exact specifications from the customer. This decreases the margin for error. You should also make sure that you have a good knowledge of the beverages that you have on offer, so that you do not have to go back to the bar to double check, wasting both yours and the customer’s time.

If you have issues in memorising orders, you should contact your manager and find ways to make you feel comfortable, this could include you having a pen and paper on you at all times. However, like most things, it all takes time and experience, and watching and learning from other staff members is essential.
