As Customer Liaison Officer, you should be aware of the signs of gambling addiction.  Here are some important facts about gambling.

Gambling is not an activity that will make you money

Gaming establishments, such as casinos or online gaming forums, make it their business to take in more money than they pay out, otherwise, the business would not be viable.  The longer a patron plays – the more money they are likely to lose.

Don’t gamble with money you can’t afford to lose

Like any other treat or hobby, money for gambling should be set aside from funds that are crucial to living, such as groceries, rent and bills.

Set yourself a budget

Before gambling, you should set yourself a limit of how much money you can afford to lose.  It doesn’t matter if it’s $20 or $100; depending on your viable limit, you should quit when you have reached that threshold.

Set a time limit

Ensure you don’t lose track of time while you’re having fun.  Like setting a budget, it is also important to set yourself a time limit before you gamble.  If you get lost track of time easily, try setting yourself an alarm on your phone or watch.

Don’t try to make up for losses

One of the fastest ways to lose more cash is to try and make up for the money that’s been lost.  Gaming machines work on complex algorithms that work in the establishment’s favour.

Don’t gamble when you are depressed or upset

This increases your risk of making poor decisions when you are in a highly emotional state or are battling a mental disorder like depression.

Balance gambling with other activities

Although gambling can be an enjoyable activity, there is a whole range of enjoyable, safe activities that don’t involve gambling.  It’s a good idea to keep social and active through activities such as sport, creativity and volunteering in your local community.
