Principles of Liquor Accords

Establish a liquor accordEstablishing a liquor accord is a positive step to ensure the safety of your venue, maintain responsible service of alcohol and foster good relations within your local community.  However, before you commit to formulating a liquor accord it is important to develop set principles that must be promoted and implemented by all Accord Members.  Here are some foundations to help you start.

1. Ensure Responsible Service of Alcohol

All venues must adhere to this principle as it promotes a safe and enjoyable environment for patrons and staff, and reduces the risk of alcohol-related crime and injury:

  • Refuse entry and service to intoxicated persons

  • Ensure minors are not served alcohol

  • Avoid promotions that encourage excessive alcohol consumption

  • Promote food and the availability of low and non-alcoholic drinks

  • Train staff in accord principles and responsible service

 2. Creating A Safe Environment

You can monitor the behaviour of your patrons and provide high standard of venue security by ensuring the following areas are met:

  • Train security officers to safely respond to any security and safety issues

  • Develop effective communication with police

  • Enhance surveillance of late night entertainment venues by using suitable security cameras

  • Maintain an accurate incident record

  • Encourage patron responsibility by using suitable communication methods such as posters within the venue

3. Develop A Good Relationship With Your Community

By carrying out the following steps, you can help develop a mutually respectful relationship between Licensees, patrons and your local community:

  • Maintain and improve your venue’s amenities

  • Encourage patrons to be respectful of local residents, such as not disturbing residents as they leave the venue at night

  • Ensure that your venue meets local noise regulations

4. Cooperate with accord members

It’s important to communicate regularly with members to ensure everyone actively participates in the implementation, promotion and monitoring of the Accord.
