On-the-job training is imperative to provide employees with the necessary information and support, to be able to perform a task effectively and efficiently. This is as theory can only provide so much information at an induction; employees need to be able to learn from a situation, as in real life, there are many variables that come with scenario, especially when dealing with customers.
On-the-job training allows workers practice their new skills and/or new tasks that they will have to undertake within their workplace. It allows them to slowly build up their confidence within a control situation.
The supervisor should, before conducting on-the-job training, complete training in providing on-the-job training to ensure that they are providing the most up-to-date information and in the best conditions for the employee. There are four (4) steps of on-the-job training:
Preparation: Prepare the employee for what is to come when they are on the floor or in the work environment
Present to the trainee
Try out: Get the employee to try out their new skills in a controlled environment
Put to work: Once the employee is confident and well equipped, put the employee to work.
Organizing on-the-job training by the supervisor is important, as you need to organise a time where there are likely to be less interruptions and the appropriate time can be taken to learn each skill. The location that is used for on-the-job training is important for two reasons: you need to find a location where there are lesser interruptions and, also, the location needs to be in the condition you will expect the worker to work in.
The supervisor should closely supervise the employee, until they become comfortable and able to demonstrate that they can do the job competently.
On-the-job training supports an effective induction program and provides the student time to learn all elements of their job, building confidence and competency. If you would like to have one of our trainers to talk to you about an induction plan that best works for you and that would be optimum for your business, we would be more than happy to sit with you and discuss your options.
