Fire Warden Training: The Responsibilities of A Fire Warden

A fire warden is an appointed person within an organisation or workplace who is in charge of upholding fire safety. Fire safety also covers evacuation, identifying potential hazards, and formulating action response for emergencies and hazards.

Fire warden training can be undertaken via Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) that are located all over the country. The training is either accredited, non-accredited or a combination of both.  Regardless, non-accredited or general knowledge training is still required for workplace compliance. CREATING AND UPDATING A FIRE EVACUATION AND EMERGENCY PLAN

If a Compliance department doesn’t exist in an organisation, part of a fire warden’s responsibility is developing fire evacuation plans. They’re also responsible for formulating plans that handle possible emergencies, including but not limited to natural and human-made disasters. A fire warden is also tasked with updating these plans based on any number of factors, such as the inclusion of new members to the workforce or organisation, the change of workplace location, or any local council updates regarding fire and emergency safety standards.

ENSURING FIREFIGHTING AND FIRE SAFETY EQUIPMENT ARE INSTALLED

Fire safety wardens have the responsibility to ensure that all fire safety-related pieces of equipment are installed correctly in the appropriate locations. This means that items like fire extinguishers are correctly installed in a clear and accessible place. Fire safety also includes signages that indicate where the fire exits are, as well as installing floor maps in easily accessible areas for reference during evacuations.

CARRYING OUT FIRE RISK ASSESSMENTS

Fire risk assessments are another responsibility of fire wardens. Fire risk assessments can be theoretical or practical; that is to say, a fire warden may be asked to review existing evacuation plans or to lead the workforce through fire drills and assess the results. Fire wardens are also responsible for forming an emergency response structure within the workplace or organisation that will implement these plans and procedures. TAKING ACTION DURING A FIRE OR EMERGENCY

Fire wardens are the first line of response during a fire or emergency. Because of this, they must know how to respond in such situations. Fire wardens should have training in how to respond to an evacuation, for example, as well as have the knowledge of how to behave or act as the circumstances call for it.
